Languages
« on: September 02, 2013, 05:12:26 AM »
I meant to make this awhile ago but anyways, here it is!
Anyone who is learning or is already speaking another language can post stuff here for things they might think help other people.
And even if you're not yet learning, if you want to learn a language I'd say go ahead and tell us why or whatever you want.
Really, anything language-related works ^^

This is a multi-lingual/traditional, etc playlist of mine. : http://www.youtube.com/playlist?feature=edit_ok&list=PLGPWASAsEtiQPuKyHc5daHgnqT3XZP1of
Any suggestions for music I'd love to see them >~<

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, currently I am learning Irish and Japanese, have been since January this year. I also plan to learn Scottish, Welsh, Manx, Breton, Cornish, German, Ukrainian, and Polish. If I can get that far I'd like to also learn Anglo-Saxon, and a First Nation's language; I also have a bunch of others for consideration if I can reach this far XD

Here's what I've used.
And for the record, I haven't paid a penny for any of these.

Japanese:

I started off here: http://www.textfugu.com/
for my Hirigana and Katakana.
This site has various posts, but it does give tips into language learning: http://www.tofugu.com/
And then for Kanji I started here:
http://www.wanikani.com/
You only get 2 levels free unfortunately.

I learned radicals here, and just checked the Microsoft IME whenever a radical didn't appear:
http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/radical-names.html

Haven't had much time to explore this site yet, but:
http://www.japanese-lesson.com/index.html] http://www.japanese-lesson.com/index.html] http://www.japanese-lesson.com/index.html

Now, I don't actually use this site. I go to the word grid and do a line per week by writing down all the info (I've been slacking though ;~;) and, I guess analyzing it(?). And then I'll go to the Kanji Grid, and I've been planning approx. 16 kanji a day, which I started 4 days ago and I've been doing pretty well so far. --- I made a list thing for it but I'll get to that later.
https://www.readthekanji.com/

Haven't looked over the site that much, may still be useful though.
http://thejapanesepage.com/

Just as an extra thing - this makes Japanese characters appear a lot cleaner looking
http://kanjialive.com/2013/04/selecting-a-better-japanese-font-for-windows-web-browsers/

Edit:
Forgot - this is a good grammar website;
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/
but it may be confusing so here's the same thing in a different format - (website is listed again below) and plus it uses the SRS System:  http://www.memrise.com/course/62166/a-guide-to-japanese-grammar-tae-kim/

Irish:
I don't know how many people will learn this one but here we go:

Since I didn't pay, I just went for the newsletter for this site, which they have every Wednesday and they usually have language tips for them each time:
http://www.bitesizeirishgaelic.com/

I love this grammar book:
http://www.gaeilge-resources.eu/Files/piiforabhargramadai.pdf

Website on grammar:
http://www.nualeargais.ie/gnag/gram.htm

For any:
Now, there is one website that I personally LOVE to bits, and it works for both these languages and more. It is a site I highly recommend; but of course be wary for mistakes!
http://www.memrise.com/

That list I mentioned earlier in the Japanese part was made there, and it makes it easier for me to study the kanji (though it does get boring to input the info) and in the end it helps me a lot. I could share the lists for the kanji that I made, but when you get to the kunyomi readings it may confuse people how I set it up.

I like this site the most for being able to type stuff in another language and get corrections:
http://lang-8.com/

For pronunciations: http://www.forvo.com

And then of course I try to find podcasts, preferably live action shows, etc. in the language for practice. Though, for me I can understand things written faster than spoken X_X

May have missed stuff so if I find things I forgot to add, I will

Oh wow, this is really helpful!

I've been using textfugu since the beginning of August and it's been really nice so far!
But now I have so many more links to things!

OuO
I mostly just quietly stalk things. Don't mind me.

What an interesting post!

For what it's worth I'm learning Finnish, so by whatever unlikely chance there is that someone else here is doing the same, here are a few good resources: http://www.uusikielemme.fi/

^ I never expected to see Finnish! I'm considering learning it if I finish my long list...XD
Do you have any fave songs/artists in Finnish? I personally love ''Huuda'' by Haloo Helsinki

^ Ahh I do love Haloo Helsinki! *High five of fandom*
My favourite song from them is "Maailmaa on tehdy meitä värten", but all their music is awesome. Nightwish is also an amazing band and one of Finland's best known, but I only know one international song in their native language - Erämaan Viimeinen. I'd definitely recommend it as a language to learn because like Japanese it is very different to most other languages in the world, which makes for a really interesting learning experience :D

On a side note, this is very ignorant of me but is there a difference between Irish and Gaelic or are they two names for the same tongue? It's an interesting choice - what made you decide to learn it?

^ *high fives back* 8D

That one's pretty awesome too *O*  But from about the 10-ish songs I heard from them so far I'm really enjoying them!
ooh I love Nightwish! I wish they did more in Finnish! I haven't heard that one - Taikatalvi is in it as well.

Well it's on my to-consider list XD

Oh and I met someone on Youtube who speaks Finnish. I think she learned it through school, but if you want I can ask her if she has anything that may help you. (It's through her I found out about Haloo Helsinki)

Well, they are separate, but they are similar even that they can understand each other fairly well.
Gaelic is usually termed for Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig is the native name). You'll hear Irish Gaelic, but you'll find stuff in ''Gaeilge'' more often.
People who speak Scottish Gaelic have an easier time understanding Irish than the Irish do them.
Manx is one that most people don't hear about, but it's similar to these two as well - it's on a small island between the two places after all XD

Just random fact: There are 6 surviving Celtic langauges. Q-Celtic (Goidelic), which are the three I mentioned above, and then P-Celtic (Brythonic) which are Cornish, Welsh, and Breton~

^ Ooh yes I forgot Taikatalvi. I love that song, but I wish it was longer!

Ooh really? I wonder if I know them - I'm on Youtube a fair bit. What's their username?

Woah that's awesome. I had no idea there were so many Celtic languages. It's a shame they aren't so widely spoken anymore because the one's I've heard are much more beautiful than English. Manx is from the Isle of Man right?

^Agree!

I don't know if you would, she generally makes GMVs, sometimes she'll use anime though. (Which is how I met her - I hosted an Anime MEP and she joined).
Her channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/NightAize

haha Yeah it's unfortunate the other Celtic languages died out a long time ago ;~; (There are actually a few mixed-type ones but I haven't paid attention to those)
Aye indeed. Manx and Cornish already died once, but luckily they were revived and are gaining native speakers again. I have seen Irish gaining some more popularity over time ^~^
And yes it is X3

i haven't used it much myself, but there's a helpful website called lang-8 where native speakers will correct your work in exchange for you doing the same for them.

Edit:
i'm such an idiot! I should have looked

It is quite a dandy website though. Been using it for my Irish since I have a native Japanese to talk to anyways XD
