This chapter smacked me in the face with the realisation that yes, just like every shonen out there where humans contract with supernatural entities, the human's spiritual reserve does determine how strong the supernatural partner becomes. It's almost shonen 101

Funny thing I never consciously associated it with Ao No Exorcist. It sorta did run around in the back of my mind, but no, i didn't pay much attention to it. Seeing Shiemi who has been the poster child throughout the manga for showing that yes, it does matter - in this chapter growing a MF TREE on a zombie (via her greenman) finally knocked some sense into me. It pretty much answered a lot of my earlier issues concerning power and hierarchy.

tentatively, the relationship between human and demons in a contract is symbiotic ( i was wondering what exactly was the benefit for a demon earlier) and that a low-rank demon can potentially match a medium or maybe even a high ranked opponent if their human has enough spiritual power.

In a way humans can disrupt the ordered hierarchy of Gehenna by powering up weaker demons.

So Shiemi isn't strong because of her Greenman, but the Greenman is strong because of her... I never thought about it that way. I was wondering how a small lump of mud and grass could be so strong, but if it's directly connected to Shiemi's powers then I guess it makes sense.
I need to think about this for a while.

I that. It doesn't sit all that well, but I still like it.

I like how it kind of means that the demon feeds off the tamer's will -- since I image that, in a normal possession scenario, the opposite is true: the demon is hampered by the host's will.

Somehow, the tamer's got to make it worth the demon's while. If they get a power up, that would work. c:

I'm still bothered by the idea of a demonic contract though. (How does that work?)

My use of the term 'demonic contract' was more a reference to the general usage of a mutually beneficial arrangement between a human and a yokai/akuma/ayakashi/spirit/demon prevalent in shonen manga, where human gets to use the familiar's magical ability, in return supplying spirit energy to power it up. Not specifically defining the relationship in Ao No Exorcist as such.

It makes sense in hindsight (for me). In the IK arc Shiemi's Green Man increased in size in direct response to her resolve (also as Izumo was captured and infected). Similarly Renzou faints every time Yamantaka is invoked. Clearly an exchange of some sort is taking place. But I wouldn't call it a classic demonic contract where the mortal pays with his/her soul.

Ah, I didn't mean it quite like a sell-your-soul sort of thing... I was thinking about contracts and fine print and was stuck on:

"If the contract is a 'this service in exchange for that one' deal, then how is the contract made if one party can't talk/isn't intelligent?"

But... the power exchange mentioned here resolves that by providing a default service that the tamer can offer the summon-ee.

Yep, and there seems to be some telepathic exchange that goes on (see: Nii understanding Shiemi's personal plant labels and Neuhaus understanding his naberius when it speaks in demon), so even if the other demon is NOT intelligent, they understand what the human wants and has to offer.

... I imagine that would make it all the more frustrating/intense if there is any distrust or lack of confidence. :c

It sort of explains the power debacle between Karura and Ucchusma too - who was stronger (for me anyway).

The demon profiles state Uchssuma was stronger, yet why did Suguro's Dad use Karura? Ucchusma was more suited to defeating the IK since his remit was burning impurities while Karura's flame was more about regeneration

But because he wanted to deal with the IK himself, Suguro's dad chose Karura instead.

Summoning Uccchusma needed the support of the other families. Suguro's dad wanted to take the burden on himself alone.  Through the ritual of Gohaen and using up 15 years of his life, Suguro's dad was hoping to power up Karura's flames to the point that they can defeat the IK.
