edit- Hmm, apparently Shura means "defender of mankind" and is of Russian origin. Interesting.

And in Arabic it means consultation.

However, more importantly, I believe it means carnage in Japanese.

But now I'm the one with a question- what does that thing above Rin's and Bon's name-kanji say? Or is that some super-cool religious sign?
^ Isn't that the emblem for their school? I think I've seen it on their ties and shirts, but I could be wrong.

But what does it mean? Or is it just a random symbol?

Also, which emblem is this? I don't recall seeing it before... is it the emblem of their school? (If so, I'm kinda surprised anyone wants to go there. It's not very inviting.)

The text on Mephisto's says something along the lines of "fili dei miserere xxxx" I can't read the last word, it's too small...
if the last word is "mei", then it means "son of god have mercy on me". I think the full saying is "domine iesu christe fili dei miserere mei peccatoris" "lord jesus christ son of god have mercy on me the sinner"
Can anyone translate what's written in them?
as VacuumTan pointed out, its just the first kanji of their names.
Quote
Bon:
- it's probably full of Buddhist symbols, like that golden circle with arrows
- a sword (kurikara?)
- a flame, I think, surrounding the sword and the circle like they were in a (smoking) vase
the "golden circle with arrows" is dharmacakra
I have no idea on the kanji. It doesn't look like it's for Karakura 霧隠
修羅(シュラ) the kanji means carnage and is pronounced shura
But what does it mean? Or is it just a random symbol?
it's not a kanji.
it always reminded me of the om symbol. but that's irrelevant.

EDIT:
about the writings on shima's emblem,
affliction and omniscience are two recurrent theme of buddhism.
if I remember correctly, theres three afflictions; greed, hate and delusion.

^ Thanks, chino. :D

HeavenlyArcher has given us a possible answer for the school symbol:

It's either the letter "Tam" which refers to the Buda Tara

http://www.visiblemantra.org/tam.html

or the letter Tram which refers to the Buda Ratnasambhava.

http://www.visiblemantra.org/ratnasambhava.html

I lean more towars "Tam". These letters are part of the "Siddhaṃ alphabet" which is used in Hinduism to write Sanskrit texts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siddha%E1%B9%83_alphabet

Sanskrit, eh? I guess they really get their ideas from all over the place.

I wonder if there's an actual link with that Buddha...

Seeing references to Buddhism or Shinto isn't really a surprise in a manga... Even if most part of Japanese people aren't into any religion, these two have the particularity of having an influence in the Japanese society that transcends that of belief...
Oh1 I have some really crazy ideas over Tara and Mephisto... not sure if it worth writing them down though, they lack any kind of base... Oh, well, that's what the crack theories section is for, right?

EDIT:

Just wanted to point out that Shima's and Konekomaru's emblems have Lotus on them... Lotus are like, the most representative flower of Buddhism teachings...

http://buddhists.org/buddhist-symbols/the-meanings-of-the-different-colors-of-the-lotus-flower-in-buddhism/

The heart in Shura's emblem (which looks as if taken from a Guns 'N' Roses album, by the way) is the "Sacred Heart of Jesus"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Heart_of_Jesus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immaculate_Heart_of_Mary

The symbol in the middle of Shiemi's emblem, I have seen it somewhere, but I can't remember what it is... I though maybe a Rosacruz, but it's not... I lean more towards something to do with Shinto than with Christianity since Shiemi, aside from her shop, is more linked to Japanese culture than to the Vatican. I do can tell you that Shiemi's familiar Nii, is pretty similar to a "kodama" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodama_%28spirit%29

And if you ever wondered, what's up with all the keys? Check the "Emblem of the Papacy"

^ I'm too lazy to take pictures, but it's that flower that came sprouting out of his chest, with a ring of crystals (and other gemstones) at the bottom.

Still cracks me up that his demon heart is a flower. I guess it makes sense though with the whole earth thing. No wonder Shiemi was his hostage of choice.

Thinking about it, if Amaimon's emblem is in the shape of his heart... Would it be the same for Mephisto?

^ You mean his heart is in his watch or something?

I dunno. I'd like to think that Mephisto is more careful than that. Besides, we haven't seen him use his full power yet, so he probably hasn't shown it to us.

I'm at a lost on what the heck is that supposed to be... I can see diamonds and other precious stones and crystals under the "flower" but the "flower itself I don't know.

It's the flower that comes out of his chest when he powers up.
